About the Project
As we all know, the Indian economy is battling multiple crises at the moment. The MSME sector is particularly under stress. These are India’s micro, small, and medium enterprises, and they contribute about 30 percent to India’s GDP. Besides, they also make up almost 45 percent of exports. This makes them one of the crucial aspects of the Indian economy. MSMEs often have trouble accessing credit, despite being the backbone of the Indian economy. In order to boost export activities, increase domestic consumption and export activities, these enterprises, which have been hit hard by the pandemic (to the tune of 30-30 percent) must be supported.
Another major issue facing India, and indeed the world more broadly, is that of our rapidly changing climate. In light of man-made climate change and the significant impacts it is projected to have (and is already having) on populations across the globe, it is all the more important that we take decisive and impactful action to decarbonize our economies, and change the ways in which we do business (ranging from how we produce, transport, and consume goods and services) to be more conscious of and responsive to environmental concerns.
Self-employment accounts for 76 percent of the total workforce in India. This means, there is an urgent need to put the skills of rural entrepreneurs to productive use. They can create products and offer services that are innovative and those that aim to solve local issues, particularly issues related to sustainability. Globalization also offers them the opportunity to connect with global supply chains, bridging the rural-urban divide. This is how Disrupt.ed was born, a social initiative that aims to empower innovative entrepreneurs, especially women, from rural communities. We focus on empowering entrepreneurs who wish to create a social impact, especially informal projects led by women and small-scale businesses. Our goal is to promote management, organization and sustainable business practices among communities with immense potential but those that lack the resources to channel their ambitions.
